My guest this week is one of the largest defensive linemen I ever watched play. Ken Hackemack joins me to talk about his career at Texas. Ken stood almost 7 feet tall and weighed over 300 pounds when he finished his career at Texas in 1989. He played from 1985-1989 and redshirted in his freshman season of 1985. Ken was recruited and played for Fred Akers from 1985-1986. After Akers was fired, David McWilliams became the head coach in 1987. Ken handled the transition and was part of that 1989 team which led to a 10-2 team the year after he graduated in 1990. He was drafted in the 5th round by the Kansas City Chiefs but was cut. He played in the new World Football League for the Frankfort Galaxy in 1991 and switched to the offensive line, which was probably a better fit. After his year in the WFL, he had several opportunities to sign in the NFL. Ken chose the Buffalo Bills but blew out his knee in preseason. During rehabilitation, he blew the same knee out again and was done with football. Not having an alternative plan, he suffered for a long period but righted the ship and finished his education. Ken Hackemack is a success story that came out of that great time period in college football, mid-1960s through the early 1990s.
