Talking Penn State Football History: Tom Shuman

Tom Shuman joins me this week. He played at Penn State from 1971-1974, backing up John Hufnagel until he got his chance to start in 1973. Tom's first season as the starter culminated in a 12-0 season, Penn State's first Heisman Trophy winner in John Cappelletti and capped off with an Orange Bowl win over LSU. Penn State had another outstanding season in 1974 with a 10-2 record and a win over Baylor in the Cotton Bowl. Tom won the Most Valuable Player award in the 1974 Orange Bowl and 1975 Cotton Bowl, and he was one of the most underrated QBs in the school's history. Penn State had a 43-5 record during his stay in Happy Valley as this was the "heyday" of Penn State football (7 major bowl appearances in 8 seasons). Enjoy this look back at these great Penn State teams from their leader, QB Tom Shuman.
