Our guest this week is the "Walk-on from Wyomissing", Brad Scovill. Brad played at Penn State from 1977-1980. He has a great story to share which is not atypical of the Penn State players of the Joe Paterno era. Brad could have played in the Ivy League but chose to attend Penn State and walk onto the football team. He started out at wide receiver, but after his first year, Coach Paterno told him to gain weight as his only shot to play would be at tight end. Penn State played Ohio State in the 3rd game of the great 1978 season. Keith Dorney couldn't play, so Irv Pankey was moved from tight end to tackle. Backup tight end, Ron LaPointe, broke his foot in practice a couple days before the game, which propelled Brad Scovill into the starting spot. He played well and earned a scholarship. Brad ended up being a 7th round pick in the 1981 NFL Draft by the Seahawks. He wasn't able to make the squad, but he started his highly successful career in banking after that. Brad Scovill is a great story, from walk-on to NFL Draftee to a successful career in banking. He was an epitome of "The Grand Experiment".
